William Cabanela in 4P joined them in receiving
his 1st Communion. They were very well prepared by their teachers
Mrs. Gennock and Miss Ostdiek. They all looked
so very sharp and the banners they made were very thoughtfully and
beautifully created. The banners are such a nice way to decorate
the church and celebrate such a special event. We now look forward
to them joining us in receiving the Eucharist at our Friday school
Masses. (4/25/07)

There was a wonderful little article by one of our very own students
in the Central California Catholic Life newspaper written by Danielle
Beshwate (6S). In this article she explains the meaning
behind the ashes we wear on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday and the
purpose of Lent. Thank you Danielle for using your religious education
and faith to teach others on what to say to questions regarding
Catholics.
Classroom Happenings
-Ms. Morris and the students of 4M were deeply
touched by the two young girls who lost their lives in a house fire
in Calwa a few weeks ago and decided to try to help them in some
way. They held a collection for donations for the surviving family
members to help them get through their loss. They raised a total
of $500! Many thanks go to the family and friends of 4M. The money
was deposited into an account set up for the girls’ family.

windows, picked up trash and cleaned benches. Their spirit showed
that they take great pride in our school. In February, our Little

Lymphoma Society. On behalf of the Little Saints, Mr. Carey was
able to present the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society with a check for
$1100! Little Saints is coordinated by Miss Ostdiek with
the help of Mrs. Kirk and Mrs. Laval. Great job and what
a great example you are to all of us. Click
here to see photos of our Little Saints in action!
Our Catholic School’s Week
celebration was a real success. Our theme of Good News in Education
highlighted the success of our talented students, our supportive
parents and our talented staff. Our students enjoyed daily activities
and completed several community service projects including collecting
and delivering boxes of personal hygiene items to the Holy Cross
Women’s Center. Thank you Mrs. Garrett and her Saints

Classroom Happenings -
There is always so much going on in the classrooms and it is fun
to hear about all the happenings. In Mrs. Schiro’s
(K3) kindergarten class, they have the Christmas spirit
by talking about gifts that they can give that are invisible. These
gifts are things that do not cost anything and cannot be seen like
a regular gift. Mrs. Schiro would like her students to take a moment
to write a couple of these down and have the children bring these
written ideas to the classroom and place them in the stocking marked
“Jesus”. They will go over them daily and place them
in a box marked ‘Gifts for Jesus’. These ideas may be
brought in every day until the Christmas break begins.
Mrs. Van Oostende’s 3rd graders went to the
Craycroft Children’s Center last week and had cookies with
the children as they delivered them Christmas stockings. The spirit
of Christmas is alive and well at St. Anthony’s School! (12/13/06)

include: Alexis DeFendis, Brianne Turnbull, Kaitlyn Turnbull,
Jigs Kirk and Camille Diener. Way to go girls!
November News - There
is always something exciting going on in the classrooms around here
and we like to keep you up on the goings on! Mrs. Blanchard’s
3rd graders have been learning many interesting facts about
Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse. They used the computer lab to help
them; they learned to draw Mickey and wrote about their experiences
in Disneyland. They celebrated Mickey’s birthday with Mickey
Mouse free dress, Mickey activities and enjoying a Mickey Mouse
birthday cake homemade by Patrick Rood’s grandmother!
In Mrs. Asparuhov’s 5th graders had their
Stone Soup Party with their 2nd grade buddies last Wednesday and
they started off the month with the All Saints Day Mass and their
display of saints on the Altar rail. They also made hot air balloons
with the many parents that helped (thank you very much!). Never
a dull moment in the classrooms, that’s for sure! In Mrs.
Peerson’s 4th grade class the students have just
finished their Powerpoint projects on extinct animals. This was
a great lead into their bigger project on the state of California.
The students also presented their 1st book report projects to their
classmates last week. So much creativity was shown in their mobiles,
dioramas, posters, book covers and written projects. They also gave
oral reports on their books. It will be fun to see what their next
book report will bring!
Football Champs -
The Memorial Youth Football Pee Wee Team went undefeated for the
2nd straight season after winning the Championship game against
Kerman (18-0). St. Anthony’s students Joseph Moreno,
Tyler Jones, Daniel Frea and Patrick Rood contributed to
the team’s success. St. Anthony’s parents David
Soto (Head Coach) and Alan Bennett (Assistant
Coach) worked with Coach Lupe, Coach Sam and Coach Moore to teach
and mode the 8, 9 & 10-year-olds into a great team that continues
to succeed on the field and has had a great head-start on life.
Congratulations to all! (11/21/06)
Classroom Happenings
– Those K3 & 4P “buddies”
are at it again! Over the last couple of weeks they have gotten
together to share information on their saints that they have created
and researched. It was a great learning time for both age groups.
Also, the K3 students had a “Teddy Bear Talk”
where each child did a fantastic job of getting up in from of the
class and talked about their favorite stuffed animal and even Mrs.
Schiro joined in on the fun!
Recently in Ms. Morris’ 4th grade they had
volunteers from Guide Dogs for the Blind give a presentation with
the dogs to see what they can do. It was a great learning experience
and they plan on having a “healthy treats” bake sale
in the spring to raise money for this wonderful organization. They
also made PEACE shirts to wear during Religion class with loving
sayings to remind everyone how to treat others at all time as Jesus
did.
The Mayflower has landed in Mrs. Renner and Mrs. Simonson’s
morning and afternoon kindergarten classes. They performed
their annual Thanksgiving play today where they incorporated a lot
of learning in Language Arts, Religion and a little Science. They
read their parts and enjoyed learning about our new America. (11/21/06)
Break A Leg! –
The Nutcracker performance at the Saroyan Theater coming up on November
25th & 26th is featuring 5 of our very own students:
Alexis Boone (7W), Mylan Biltz (2G), Nathan Biltz (4P), Hannah Giardullo
(4M) and Rachel Giardullo (2G). Please see the flier sent
in last week’s Tuesday packet for more info. Also, another
performance coming up called the “Frog and Toad Play”
at Cynthia Merrill’s School of Performing Arts on December
2nd, 3rd, 9th, & 10th is a light-hearted, happy children’s
play featuring more of our students, Megan Tamiyasu (3V)
and Julia Lokey (K3). What a pleasure to see our students
performing in the arts.
Classroom Happenings
– There is always so much going on in the classrooms and I
would like to highlight some of them. In Ms. Morris’
4th grade class they are diligently working on a Thanksgiving
banner to remind us of all the blessings from God for which we are
grateful. They are also busy at work on PowerPoint presentations
on our great state of California.
Football Tournaments
- Congratulations to our 8th and 6th grade boys
who won the PAL Championship Flag Football Varsity and Jr. Varsity
tournaments on November 4th. Also, congratulations go to St.
Anthony’s tackle football team of 4th, 5th & 6th graders
who won the championship last Saturday evening. This team
went undefeated 9-0 for the season. They made their coaches Charles
Manock, John Trenberth, Patrick Finn and John McGrath very proud!
Classroom News –
Mrs. Van Oostende’s 3rd graders had a chance to visit
the Machado/Woodward Dairy last week and learn all about where milk
comes from (not just the carton that you buy at the grocery store!).
They would like to thank Mr. Olson for his help
with their memory making. The students typed and illustrated their
experiences from the dairy with his help. I wonder if they talked
about chocolate milk coming from brown cows…..Also, the 8th
graders went to the Warnor’s Theater yesterday to
see a compilation of short story plays, many of which they have
read in English. The students were lucky enough to have front row
seating for great viewing. We received compliments on their excellent
behavior. Our students make us very proud!
Fore!! - Congratulations
to all of the 7th and 8th grade golfers who competed in the C.V.A.L.

Cenci, Max Kitay, Michael Kearns, Adam Boujikian, Dylan Olson, Phillip
Dodd, Connor Chooljian, Spencer Hickman, Patrick Finn and
Nick Nakashian. (10/31/06)
Our Lady of Fatima Mass
– If you went to the 5:15 Mass on Saturday, October 7th, then
you may have noticed the little visionaries were performed by our
very own, Rachel Kratz (1P) as Jacinta, Tiffany
Lee (3V) as Lucia and Casey Raymond (3V)
as Francisco. These children were instrumental in representing those
very important children that Our Lady of Fatima appeared to beginning
in May of 1916. The Mass was beautifully presided over by Msgr.
Cotta. Thank you very much to these children for taking on these
roles. (10/20/06)
Congratulations –
Our very own Alex Figueroa (3B) will perform in
the Fresno Grand Opera production of “South Pacific”.
He will play Jerome De Becque and sing along side Deborah Gibson

Alex! (10/20/06)

also join the team as alternates. (10/10/06)
Children’s Hospital “Change
Bandits” – As mentioned in previous
letters, St. Anthony’s School participated as a “Change
Bandit” to raise funds for Children’s Hospital. I am
happy to report that due to your generosity we were able to donate
over $850 to this wonderful cause. Thank you to all who generously
donated to show St. Anthony’s appreciation for the wonderful
services that Children’s Hospital provides to our valley’s
children. (10/10/06)
